The 5-Step Memory Toolkit for Language Learners

Want to remember new words from your favorite shows or songs without writing boring lists that you’ll never look at again?

Let me show you another way.

It’s called the Memory Toolkit, and it can turn any episode, song, or story into a goldmine.

And the best part? You only need five steps.

You can check a video version here:

Step 1: Give it a Home

Let’s say you’re watching Stranger Things and you hear the word “vanish.”

Don’t just let it disappear.

Whether you write it down or say it out loud, always give it a home: you could use a notebook, your notes app, a secret WhatsApp chat, whatever you want.

Just make sure all your new words have one place where you can find them.

Step 2: Make it Yours

Now that the words have a roof, organize them in a way that makes sense to you.

Group it with other spooky verbs like «sneak,» «whisper,» or «lurk.»

Or create categories like

  • Words I’d see in a scary movie
  • Words I’d use when I’m hungry
  • Words Eleven would say

The more you it feels, the easier it is to remember.

Step 3: Flip the Format

Here’s the trick: lists don’t stick!

Turn it into a map. A comic. A voice diary. A TikTok sketch. A scene you act out.

You’re remixing the information, so your brain builds more connections, and that means fewer chances to forget.

Step 4: Make It Pop

Now it’s time to add flavor.

Use colors, doodles, and emojis.

Or sound effects, accents, and music.

Or even gestures and movement.

The more you involve your senses, the stronger the memory will be.

Instead of just writing “vanish,” say it in a breathy voice:

“She… vanished…”

[Insert here an echo effect.]

That one you won’t forget.

Step 5: Use it or Lose it

You’ve collected it. You’ve grouped it. You’ve played with it.

Now: use it.

Send weird voice notes to your friends:

«Don’t freak out, but I think my homework vanished

Record a voice note, tell a story, or show off your creations.

The more you talk about it, the more you own it.

Now, remember:

  1. Give it a home
  2. Make it yours
  3. Flip the format
  4. Make it pop
  5. Use it or lose it

Whether you are into music, movement, talking things out, or writing, this works for you too.

Just start with one step and try it the next time you watch a show.

Because the best way to learn a language…

…is to live it.

Thanks for giving this a go. Now go make those words stick.
